So I've started off my last semester of under-grad school. I'm rather nervous but yet I'm ready to graduate. These past few years have been a lot of fun and I will remember them as just that. But I'm ready to move on. I'm ready to get started with a career, rather then fill my days with classes that I don't really need and drama I don't feel like putting up with.

As far as art goes, I'm waiting on supplies to get my senior studio project started and I'm developing ideas for my painting class.

For painting, I want to return to some old political art that I've made in the past. My focus will be to combine canvas size painting and my love for street art.

AS for my senior studio class, here is a sneak peek at the cover for my comic I will be working on.

New semester

So I've decided that I'm going to make an intro to a graphic novel for my senior show. It's playing off of the whole "Iron Robot" thing except the robot is human sized and piloted by the main character. This winter I really returned to my roots and it has taught me that cartooning and comic books are what I have always loved and I need to stick with that.

This project will be a kind of self portrait; a character based around myself, set in a rural environment (I live in a cabin), with robots, aliens, and cool fight scenes (I had a wild imagination as a kid).

This is gonna be fun.

So I had written a post about my life and what the good and bad times have taught me. But I deleted it because I don't think I gave the good and bad times justice. It got me thinking that maybe I should write down some memories from when I was a kid and start sketching them out, both the good and the bad. Just a thought.

So I've had a sort of revelation. For the longest time I've been trying to find something new, something better then what I used to do with my art. What I have realized is that, I don't need to find something new. Rather I need to return to my roots and do what I love, I just need to draw. With this in mind, I've decided that for my senior show, I'm just gonna bust out drawings all semester long and then decide which one's I want to put into my show. I'll combine sketches and inked/colored works. It's who I am and what I do. Why change that?

This is my latest version of my Sigma Nu tattoo design

Here is another tattoo idea. It combines the tools I use in my art with a sort of motto; write on the walls, get your ideas out there and don't be afraid to express yourself.

My thought's on returning to my roots provides the idea of going into tattooing. I don't have to come up with my own ideas, but I get to do something that I would love; draw on someone and leave a mark for everyone to see.

Christmas and Frank und Stein

I got a Robotech Battroid Valkyrie model for Christmas. I found it online a while ago. But what I didn't realize was that the model was from 1990 (it's as old as me). I was hesitant to build it, but that was the reason why I asked for it, to build it. The problem I've run into now is what paint to use. Here's a picture of it.

I've also been thinking a lot about what I want to do for my senior show. Character design is something I've done sense middle school. Also, I'm constantly throwing story ideas around in my head. With this in mind I decided to revisit "Frank und Stein". I made some minor changes to the characters; still a very simple style. We'll see how they develop over the next few weeks.

Going off of the character design thought, I put some ink to a sketch of a comic page a drew last year. The story is about a character I made in high school named Six.

The image is a rough idea, considering there is no background.

I'm returning to my roots and I'm excited about art for the first time in a while.

Kim Jong-un

So those who have woken up by now should be aware that Kim Jong-il, the former ruler of North Korea died yesterday (or today, time zones are confusing). His 27 yr old son, Kim Jong-un has been named as new leader of North Korea.

His young age got me thinking about what male Americans are doing at 27, compared to running a country.

Decided to add some color to this one. (I photographed it instead of scanning, like I normally do, because my scanner is back at school)

As many of my close friends now, in middle school and early high school I used to play Warhammer 40k. I haven't really touched my stuff sense high school. Seeing as I have a few days before I start work during break, I decided to work on some projects I never finished. The paint jobs aren't the greatest (I feel old because my hands aren't as steady as they used to be).

So I've started messing around with some comic stuff (strips, political, and a book idea).
These two images are just some sketches.

I sketched this idea out a week or so ago. It is my take on the Occupy movement. Honestly, if you are blind to the fact that this country is run by corporations, not citizens then you truly are the citizen the money grubbing whores want you to be.

This strip was drawn tonight after I heard the news that the new defense bill passed. If you are not aware, there is a clause in this bill, which grants the military the right to detain U.S. citizens with out due process.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm going to practice my rights (what little is left of them) daily. Even after the government has sold my soul to wall street and denied me the very freedoms this country was built on, I will speak up. This is of course not the current state of this country, but I fear we are heading down that road.

Wrapping up the semester

"Self" is my self portrait I made for printmaking.

"The upper hand" is a print I am currently finishing up. The meaning behind the work is left up to the viewer. The original idea was war v.s. peace, but as I sketched out the idea it turned into more of a gender war theme.

"Manhattan" was my first project for print making. It is inspired by the ten year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

"Tools of the Trade" was created using a plaster mold of a spray paint can. I then carved the government seal into the clay body and inlaid black underglaze, finishing with a clear glossy glaze.

Last, but not least, is the finished "Iron Rocket". This project was a huge pain in the ass, but I'm glad to see the finished product.

Over winter break my main focus is going to be figuring out what to do for my senior studio class. I don't know if I want to go with illustrations and comics or street art themed work. The biggest problem I'm running into is deciding what element of my artistic talent will really push my creativity to a new level.

Is this Justice?

This world is in a phase of revolution. The Middle East has erupted with the voices of the people, the people who have for so long been oppressed. They have found freedom. But in the aftermath of months of protests and conflicts, here in America I see a new movement coming to life. At first they were put down for not having a single voice, but why should the masses be condensed to such a thing? The 99% is just that, it is everyone who does not run this country (My subconscious wanted to type company), who cannot sit in the office of politicians and drop cash and rewards for loyalty to those who control the 99%. Yet I see this movement coming of age. The government has moved to shut down the movement, to quiet the voices of the masses. But if there is one piece of hope that I hold in my heart is that, the people will not give up. We have seen the injustice of this world, of this country, of the money grubbing whores in their penthouses. I hold hope that the voice of the people will breach their gold plated doors and they will see that America wants equality, and it will get it one way or another.

So I've got a couple school projects going on right now. I have to finish glazing "Iron Rocket" (which I really don't feel like doing). I also have some cast clay molds that just came out of the bisque firing which need to be finished with a gloss glaze. To add to the pile of ceramics work, I am making four smaller robots (action figure size) complete with plastic packaging. I just finished my self portrait for print making (should have an image up as soon as I get more batteries for my camera). Tonight I sketch out to tattoo concepts for some friends back home. All in all I'm pretty busy, but I'm enjoying the different projects I have underway.

Wake Up

There comes a point in your life when you realize that the way things are going just doesn't (and will not) work. It may be a long time coming, or a sudden revelation. Either way, there is this feeling that something must change. That feeling is resting in my heart and is constantly on my mind. I've begun the change, but it is a long metamorphoses. It will not happen over night or in a week. This transformation is a total change of who I am. I have to change my priorities and focus on my education, even if it means being tired all day. I have to realize that I cannot fix problems on my own and because of that I do not need to involve myself in every issue that comes to my attention. All I know is that I must prepare for the long haul. This road I have started down will be rocky and uneven, but at the end there is an oasis, a peaceful place where I am who I want to be.

Iron Rocket

My current project for Intermediate Ceramics is to construct a robot with a defined purpose. I chose to build I robot who fights of invading aliens. It's simple concept with a lot of room to play. Inspired by toys and cartoons shows from my childhood, the Iron Rocket comes stomping through the ruins of a city, hunting for the invaders.

Shown below is the model I built first to figure out some of the physics that would go into the construction of the full size piece.

Monument

Have you ever really considered what goes in to the creation and construction of monuments and memorials?
I recently started reading a book called Critical Issues in Public Art which is a collection of essays related to monuments and other public art works. The first reading was about the Washington Monument and it got me thinking about what public works of art really mean to me. To me, the Washington monument really only relates to George Washington through it's title. This realization forces me to question whether or not other monuments really educate us on the concepts they are meant to represent.
Last week I was asked to build a Luminary Float for 9/11, which will be set adrift on a small pond at Gettysburg College. My first thought was to build a silhouette of the twin towers. This clearly ignores the victims from flight 93 and the Pentagon. But it does reflect the modern mythology behind that day. Too often do we forget about all those who where affected by the attacks. We forget about the Emergency Personnel whole sacrificed so much to insure the safety of others. This also raises the question of whether or not memorial services should bring to question whether or not the lives lost to the wars carried out in the name of justice for the victims of that day are really worth the gain. Everyone has their own story and therefore every memorial cannot share each side of that story. All artists can try to do is give an equal representation.

My thoughts and prayers go out to every person who has been impacted by terror attacks here in the US and elsewhere around the world.

Cookie Cutter Art

Someone please tell me how hard it is to redraw a cartoon character or how strenuous it is to draw faces on random fruit and take snapshots of em. Really you call this art? Why can't people come up with something fucking original. The fact that people buy this cookie cutter shit as art really makes me wonder how the hell anyone is really supposed to make it as an artist. I understand that people learn to draw by recreating other artist's work. But there comes a point in time when you really need to step away, grow up, and prove that you can be original to some degree. I like to feel that I learned to draw by looking at anime and manga, but it took maybe a year or two for me to start coming up with my own characters. They were shit of course, but at least I threw the cookie cutter out. If you have nothing original to share with the world, maybe you should put the crayons down and try out for American Idol, I hear they are in the business of cookie cutting.

Some exciting news!

So I was informed a few days ago that my graffiti piece (the one I filmed) Is going to be featured as the cover of The Mercury, Gettysburg College's Arts and Literature Magazine. I always doubt my artistic ability, but moments of recognition like this keep me moving. It is a great aspect for one to be humble about their work. But this characteristic cannot survive in this world without something pushing the artist forward, otherwise I would just sit in my room drawing my life away, never showing my work to anyone. So as the title states I am very excited and inspired to push myself.

I've notice that I am a stick lost in the stream. Floating with the current into the obis that is the ocean of the world. I'm not one to contemplate my life to often, rather I just go about my business from day to day. But this is a problem. I draw, sculpt, and carve, yet I have no idea where my inspiration comes from. This is why I am here now. over the next few weeks I want to examine my past and try and find why I create what I create.

March On

These are not collective thoughts, just remarks on my future.
It's hard to forget the struggles I went through last semester, academically, personally, and emotionally. I could compare it to moments during my High School career. Moments when I had not hope and felt to purpose. But I've had some time away from the chaos of school; some time to relax and collect myself.
Old habits are hard to forget but I'm working to erase them from my life. This semester isn't going to be an easy one, but I hope I now have the drive to succeed, to push myself in my studies, my art work, and empower myself to change my outlook on a few things.
I've spent the past few weeks with those who are important to me. That's the big reason behind my lack of art work right now, but the time was definitely needed.
As the hours count down to my return to college, the time grows closer to set some goals, fill some pretty big shoes, and march on.

The empire state part 2

For this entry I want to touch on a lot of random things I thought about while in NYC. It was great to have my mind spinning with creativity. But I could not ignore some things that seemed to either frustrate me or strike a never of anger.

On saturday I visited the MoMA. This was not my first trip to this museum but I seemed to realize why I don't enjoy much of the art I see in that building. The thought struck me that art cannot rely on a few elements and principles, in fact in order for someone to be a true master of art the must be able to successfully incorporate all of these factors into their artwork. Now, this does not mean that I hate almost every piece of art I have ever seen. What this thought made me realize was why I held so much doubt in my own talent. I'm not some great artist but I do have the ability to become something great and I often wonder if I will ever master all of the elements and principles of art, and in my mind be a "true" artist.

Sunday morning the group I was with took a stroll up fifth ave into central park and visited the Guggenheim Museum. If you haven't visited this museum then I should explain the the floor is a continuous slope forming a spiral. While looking at some art from the early 1900's from German, France, and Italy, I wondered, "In a building with crooked floors how do you hang a painting 'straight'?" Either you hang it strictly vertical, ignoring the floor an have it look crooked in relation to the floor, or you hang it perpendicular with the floor and have it appear to slanted with respect to the viewer who is standing vertical due to gravity.

The final thought I want to touch on was brought up by my adviser. I noticed how the cathedrals of NYC are dwarfed by the skyscrapers. He pointed out that the point of a cathedral is to stand above all other buildings and be viewable from around the city. Now these majestic temples are hidden in the shadows of penthouses and office buildings. This is the perfect illustration of how the culture of America has changed over the past century.

PS- The sketch above was done in my hotel room after leaving the MoMA. I do like very few pieces in that museum.

The Empire State

So over the weekend I had the chance to visit NYC, meet some artists, and visit some galleries. I'm going to use a couple posts to talk about my adventures.

I went to NYC with the Visual Arts Department from Gettysburg College. We spent Saturday Morning walking around Chelsea visiting different Art Galleries. Over all I was not too impressed by what I saw hanging on the walls of the remodeled garages. The works by Wangechi Mutu as well as Albert Oehlen did spike my interest, but the majority of the art I saw was plain and simple shit. The Galleries were filled with to much "Modern Art", which in my opinion, while modern art does demostrate skill and planning it fails to incorporate all the elements and principles of art. Now before I go on I will state that I am a hypocrite and by no means to I consider myself to be a good artist. I see all this art that moves millions of dollars around the world and wonder how it is possible. I am never fully satisfied with my own work because I feel that I am still learning how to use all of the elements and principles to create truly great work.

I don't mean to say that I hate every piece of "Modern Art" I have ever seen. However I cannot comprehend how some people can enjoy such simplistic, "conceptual" work. But to each his own, and my own is to be the anti-"Modern Artist".

On a closing note, amidst all the multimillion dollar galleries we stumbled upon a great alley way underneath a bridge. Along the walls were some great graffiti/street art pieces mixed amongst parked cars and empty wine bottles. The piece which displays a two headed eagle had a tag next to it which stated "blog about this". I'm debating as to whether the artist was looking to get their work out onto the internet world or if it was a blatant statement expressing disdain for the blogging community. Either way it is an impressive piece and I think people should see it. I mean, it is street art right?

Entertainers v. Artists

In America people are always struggling to get ahead and to succeed. A perfect example of how we do that can be found in our entertainers, people have worked their way up through the ranks to gain money and fame. But there is an irony within this idea of success as an entertainer. Actors and actresses are often called stars because they shine in the eyes of the masses. But stars to not glimmer forever. This is also true for actors, especially comedians. Take a look at who the main comedic roles are played by in movies. It is an every changing group. Some comedians try to hang on but often fail. Like the stars in the night sky, they are born, they glimmer, then they dim and die out.
Lets examine artists now. For the most part, artists are born with a talent and through practice they improve. Some go on to sell their works in galleries, others find their works hanging in museums. But more often then not, artists find themselves producing works for commissions or work for graphic design. It is much harder to gain fame and prestige within this field. But once an artist sells a piece for millions of dollars, the price is set, they become established and will from that point out sell their work for millions.
The entertainers gain fame with ease through exposure to the public but are soon replaced by new comers. While success in the art world is much harder to reach but once one has achieved such a goal they own their prestige even after death.

Finally got the chance to do some figure drawing.
Hopefully I'll get around to doing some painting in the coming weeks.
I made a design for some shirts, bandannas, and stickers. The label would be called "Ride Local", meant to express respect for local skaters, boards, skiers, surfers, etc. I really like the idea so I think I'm gonna role with it.

BOMB IT

I sat down and watched a pretty awesome documentary on graffiti artist around the world called "Bomb It". I liked it a lot but it made me realize something... no matter how much I look up to street artist, I will never be one. I have some personal views on the problems in society but I don't have the balls to be in danger of getting arrested for tagging or putting up art on public walls. I'm one of those people who wants to take the graffiti style and put it on canvas. I'm something that graffiti artist despise. Fantasies to paint the sides of buildings are merely that, fantasies. Something I want to work on is to find a way to show my respect for street artist and stay away from becoming that which they hate. I'll stick with my canvas and paper, showing the world that graffiti is a revolution in the art world, in the world in general.

So to all you bombers out there, keep at it, and don't forget to realize the effect your work has on artists who don't have the balls to pay the price of jail time for art. I'll live vicariously through your can and your wheat paste.

It's been forever sense I've been on here. It is rather difficult to post anything these days considering I still have no camera and wont be able to get one for while. I guess the real reason why I haven't made an effort to post anything though is the fact that I am pledging Sigma Nu fraternity. It's a lot of work but I'm seeing the benefits already.

To banter for a little while; I felt as if I were in some sort of comic book the other day when I read the news that a group known as the "Black Widows" were responsible for the subway bombings in Moscow. The name of the organization just seems like it should be out fighting the "RED legion" in a war filled with laser vision and atomic punches. The name does make sense, considering the background of the organization, but my mind couldn't help wonder into a landscape of turning pages and speech bubbles.

To close up, I have been falling behind on sketches but I've got a couple of things I'm working on that I'm looking forward to constructing.

With that said I'm gonna be looking for a camera to borrow while I'm at school until then I wont be able to post anything unless I decide to use my scanner... which won't happen.

Life- a short philosophy

There has always been the question of what separates man from the other animals on this planet. Is it the way we interact or is it the measure of our civilizations? I view it as neither. What separates us is our desire for life, self preservation. I started to think about this when I walked into an eating area at my school. There was a pretty good sized group sitting on the one end of the room watching a slide show, every now and then someone would stand up, walk up to the mic and say a few words regarding cancer. This group of people called themselves Colleges Against Cancer. It got me thinking... is it really the college fighting cancer? Or is this an embodiment of mankind's struggle with this natural phenom. If the later is truly what I witnessed it raises the question of why does mankind strive for life? Those of religious background should not fear death but embrace it and trust in their faith to carry them to salvation. But I feel this way of thinking has passed. In today's society of medicine and idealism we strive to survive through science... no longer do we leave the continuation of life to faith and religion. This torch has been passed on to test tubes and experiments. So what makes us human? I feel it is our desire for immortality.

Here's another update of some moleskine sketches. These are from around march of 09 when I went to Connecticut to visit my sister. I stopped in Philly while taking the train (shoeshine figures angel statue). also the "no man fits the circle" is a tattoo design I came up with for a friend (I didn't realize how off the anatomy was, I've never drawn from a live male model).

I spent this past weekend in New York City, sadly I didn't have much time for sketching. But I'm going back in December maybe I can get some then.

Now I have to get caught up on work for my sociology course.

P.S.- Khufu Hookah lounge on 3rd street between 1st and 2nd is and awesome place to hangout.

Trip to the National Gallery

So today for intro to painting we took a trip to the national gallery in DC. I have respect for the artists on display there but I'm not a fan of most of the works I saw, it's not something I'd hang up in my living room (if I had one). I did find some sculptures I enjoyed... like this lion.

I'm starting to love long car rides... weird.

Okay so here's the plan: I have a bunch of old art I want to start posting on here but I also want to posts moleskin sketches and works I'm working on at college.
To start off here's a piece I made back in High School its about two and a half years old now.
